What hiring managers REALLY want to see…
· Presenting a stable work historyEmployers need to see consistency on a résumé. “If you work for a number of months, show a prospective employer that you stayed busy by taking classes [or] volunteering.”
· Make the résumé come to lifeCreate an online portfolio and give your résumé an new life and meaning.
· Showcase awards on your résumé
· Demonstrate listening skillsTake the time to paraphrase what your interviewer says to you.
· Understand company initiativesDo your homework. Don’t just browse the company website an hour before the interview. Find out things about the company so that you can ask questions during your interview. This shows you care and are interested in the company itself.
· Explain what you can do for themA sure way to get the hiring managers attention is by delving into how your experience can benefit the company. Before each interview, take the time to tailor your response.
· Ask the right questions during the interviewDiscuss a few well-thought-out questions with your interviewer. Questions should be prepared in advance of your interview.
· DON’T FORGET TO FOLLOW-UPSending a thank you note or e-mail should never be an afterthought. Forgetting to do so and running out of time can prevent you from advancing to the next round of interviews. “Dropping a handwritten thank-you note into the mail immediately after an interview can make the difference in getting hired or not.”
